SUPER BOWL - CBS HYSTERICAL AFTER JANET JACKSON BEARS BREAST
OUTRAGE AT CBS AFTER JANET BARES BREAST DURING DINNER HOUR; SUPER BOWL SHOW PUSHES LIMITS Top CBS executives approved a musical skit where Janet Jackson would expose her breast during the MTV-produced Super Bowl half-time concert, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned. "The decision to go forward went to the very top of the network," a well-placed source explained from New York. The groundbreaking scene came during the most-watched television broadcast of the year -- and during the dinner hour for the nation's west coast viewers. Officially, CBS drew distance from the show: "CBS deeply regrets the incident that occurred during the Super Bowl halftime show," the network said in a release. "We attended all rehearsals throughout the week and there was no indication that any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended." In a press release before Sunday's game, CBS's sister outlet [VIACOM's] MTV promised "Janet's Shocking Moments." "I'll get you naked by the end of this song," sang performer Justin Timberlake, moments before he ripped off Jackson's top, exposing a bare breast -- the nipple covered by a tassel. CBS's main New York switchboard was immediately bombarded with complaints about the stunt, network sources said late Sunday. The NFL claimed outrage over the stunt: Statement by NFL Executive Vice President Joe Browne regarding the Super Bowl halftime show: "We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced Halftime show. They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime." SUBMITTED BY BRANDON Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 MTV Touted Jackson 'Shocker' Before Topless Super Bowl Dance CBS is claiming it had no idea that a Super Bowl half-time dance routine between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake would feature the pop diva going partially topless. But four days before Ms. Jackson assaulted tens of millions TV viewers during the family hour with her R-rated moment, a press release by the company producing the show boasted that her dance would be "shocking." "I don't think the Super Bowl has ever seen a performance like this," Jackson choreographer Gil Duldulao said, in a press release posted to MTV's web site on Jan. 28. "The dancing is great. She's more stylized, she's more feminine, she's more a woman as she dances this time around. There are some shocking moments in there too." CBS and NFL switchboards were flooded with complaints as millions of families gathered to watch what was supposed to be a wholesome family-oriented TV sports event. But instead, a song laced with Timberlake's allusions to getting Jackson naked ended with him ripping off part of her top, exposing Jackson's tassled breast. A statement issued by the NFL said it was unlikely that MTV would ever be allowed to produce another Super Bowl half-time show. But despite the music network's boast that the "shocking" routine would show Jackson as "more of a woman as she dances around," CBS is calling her nudity "unexpected." SUBMITTED BY DAVID Z.
